14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!
18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
Psalm 139:14-18 (KJV)
This is a Psalm of David, a Psalm of praise and worship to the Lord for His omnipotent power and sovereign hand in the lives of men. Life is ever-changing, and yet there is one constant in our lives that never changes and that is the presence and provision of God. God is aware of us in every situation and every circumstance. God desires a relationship with all who are born in this life.
A Precious Life
(verse 14)
We live in an age with much debate concerning human life. This passage reveals that life is precious, ordained by God. We have been fearfully and wonderfully made.
The phrase fearfully and wonderfully made confirms this. “Fearfully” means we have been created through a process that brings astonishment and awe. “Wonderfully made” means we have been made distinct, marked out, and distinguished. Each life is different and precious.
A Particular Life
(verse 15)
Once again, we find that we were made of God. We were fashioned by His almighty hand. We were made in secret. That has the idea of being covered or sheltered. God hovered over us and produced life when we were conceived.
The phrase “curiously wrought” has the idea of an artist mixing the colors for a portrait or a weaver skillfully weaving the fabric of a garment or cloth. There is one in charge of the finished product. We are a work of the master’s hand.
God created us as He desired and He created us for His purpose. The physical attributes are but a portion of God’s creation in our lives. He has gifted us with particular abilities. (Jeremiah 1:5)
A Predestined Life
(verse 16)
God created us to become what He desired. He created us for His purpose and He continues to work through us for that purpose. (Romans 8:28-31)
A Privileged Life
(verses 17-18a)
Life itself is a privilege that some never get to enjoy. But for the child of God, life is truly a privilege. We have been afforded the opportunity of salvation. We have been blessed with a good family, friends, and a church family. We have never suffered need in my life. God has blessed me abundantly.
A Preserved Life
(verse 18b)
The saved are secure in Christ. There is nothing in this life that can separate us from the hand of God. This physical life will not last forever.
