7 But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.
1 Timothy 4:7-9
A Biblical Understanding of Ungodliness
In the New Testament, there are only four references where the word “ungodliness” is used. They are words used to speak of the behaviour of an unbeliever.
- God’s wrath will be revealed from heaven against all ungodliness. (Romans 1:18)
- God would turn away ungodliness from the children of Israel. (Romans 11:26)
- Vain words display the life of an ungodly (unsaved) person. ( 2 Timothy 2:16)
- We should deny ungodliness and live righteously instead. (Titus 2:12)
Those who are separated from God, ungodliness is the condition of being polluted with sin:
- To act in a way that is contrary to the nature of God.
- To actively oppose God in disobedience.
Dealing with the Respectable Sin of Ungodliness (Psalm 10:4)
A. Definition of the respectable form of ungodliness (Romans 1:18)
Paul distinguishes between ungodliness and unrighteousness:
- Ungodliness describes an attitude towards God.
- Unrighteousness refers to sinful actions in thought, word, or deed against God.
B. We are to acknowledge God in all our ways (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Acknowledgment of God Evaluation
A+ (100%) | I acknowledge God in all my ways throughout the day. |
A (90-99%) | I acknowledge God in almost all my ways throughout the day. |
B+ (88-89%) | I acknowledge God in most of my ways throughout the day. |
B (83-87%) | I acknowledge God in many of my ways throughout the day. |
B- (80-82%) | I acknowledge God in a fair amount of my ways throughout the day. |
C+ (78-79%) | I acknowledge God in just over average amount of my ways throughout the day. |
C (73-77%) | I acknowledge God in the average amount of my ways throughout the day. I’m the average Christian in my walk with Christ. |
C- (70-72%) | I acknowledge God in below average amount of my ways throughout the day. |
D (60-69%) | I acknowledge God in few of my ways throughout the day. I’m displeasing the Lord in how I think of Him throughout the day. |
F (below 60%) | I am failing in my acknowledgment of God throughout the day. I have failed the Lord in acknowledging Him enough throughout the day. |
C. We are to seek the Lord’s will on daily activities and decisions. (James 4:13-15)
D. We are to actively exercise (discipline) ourselves to godliness. (1 Timothy 4:7-8)
Discipline is acquired in two ways:
- From within. You exercise yourself to do it.
- It is action done unto ourselves.
Ways to develop godliness (ABC’s):
- Active prayer life
- Bible study and devotions
- Church attendance
- Dedicated thoughts to the Lord throughout the day
- Establish godly friendships
- Filled with the Holy Spirit
E. We are to actively have ourselves exercised(disciplined). (Hebrews 12:11)
Make this your life’s goal for overcoming the “respectable sin” of ungodliness: to grow more in your conscious awareness that every moment of your life is to be lived thinking of the presence of God with you. (Philippians 4:5)
